Main objective

Our objective is to build a Network of Networks: a virtual community of people that are willing and committed to work with colleagues to make sure their collective knowledge and values on biodiversity and ecosystem services are used to support decisions that impact our environment and our wellbeing.

Approach

We will engage with networks from different relevant subjects and from all over Europe, from local to international, to map existing knowledge, to find out the best ways to bring it together and to use it for decision support. Collectively we will also identify gaps of capabilities to plan for specific training. 

We also aim to build a virtual tool (the 'Science-Policy-Society Forum ') that will help manage the network and facilitate the interactions between its members to improve the participation of all those interested, the quality and efficiency of its products and the continuous collective improvement of our community. 

Our main activities will therefore be: 

1. Building the Network of Networks, based on existing structures to connect in an ethical, effective and flexible way the main relevant networks on biodiversity and ecosystem services and increase engagement of relevant actors from other fields. we envisage that networks and other partners could take up different roles in the network of networks.


2. Identifying, learning from and carrying out dissemination and capacity-building activities with and for all relevant networks to increase the ability of the networks and institutions and their individual experts to get engaged and to interact more effectively with policy and society.


3. Linking up with the activities of relevant international networks and platforms and their European and national structures to foster further collaboration.


4. Setting up the Science-Policy-Society Forum to carry out the tasks of this and other activities within EKLIPSE.

On-going processes: We are continuously updating our maps based on ongoing exchanges with the Network of Networks.

EKLIPSE's 1st Dynamic map aims to illustrate one the main challenges of the project: we need to bring together quite different actors in the Network of Networks, in a constantly increasing number.

As EKLIPSE is referring to a network meaning any kind of organised exchange, from informal thematic networks to formal institutions networks in European or even global scale, it is important for the current and potential partners to be able to identify their group’s typology (and identify others like them) but also to understand the extend of the Network of Networks and the networking capacity it can provide, now and in the future.

EKLIPSE's 2nd Dynamic Map identifies and explains the potential roles of the Network of Network partners in the project and in the future EU Science-Policy-Society interface mechanism. Through this visualization we choose to present networks which have a potential to contribute to each one, highlighting the partners that have already supported these roles through the project’s activities.

Different partners can take on different roles in the EKLIPSE network, depending on their expertise, and of course there are many partners who can play multiple roles, in different stages of the project and, later, in the established EU mechanism.
