CfR.2/2017/1 How are European energy policies affecting biodiversity and ecosystem services in countries globally?

Find here the final report that seek a better understanding of the telecoupling effects of the EU’s low carbon energy policy on biodiversity and ecosystem services in countries globally, from an SDG perspective through two questions:

What are the SDG targets that the EU energy policy tries to pursue (also indirectly) and what are the systemic trade-offs and co-benefits that are created beyond the territorial boundaries, where, at what scale, and who are the affected winners and losers?
What policies and governance mechanisms could remedy these impacts; or in hindsight, how could one have chosen pathways to more sustainable development?

CfR.3/2018/2 How could the comments from the scientific community support the comments/questions of the EU negotiators of the IPBES SPM on Global assessment?

Nature-based Solutions to Promote Climate Resilience in Urban Areas

EKLIPSE has published the report from its first request from policy makers for synthesizing available knowledge: An impact evaluation framework to support planning and evaluation of nature-based solutions projects.

Knowledge Synthesis Methods

The Expert Group on Knowledge Synthesis Methods identified 21 types of knowledge synthesis methods to identify and characterise robust evidence and knowledge gaps, in response to requests to EKLIPSE from policy makers and societal actors.

The group has also produced 21 guidance notes which describe strengths and weaknesses of each method; they also provide key references and examples of where a method has been used for policy decisions.

Foresight activity/webinar reports

What needs to be done to better integrate research and knowledge on biodiversity and ecosystem services from the global to the European level, and vice versa?

This request is based on the need to translate the outcomes of global science-policy processes on biodiversity and ecosystem services into action at the European scale and, vice versa, to ensure that European science-policy processes contribute to the global debate.

This recognizes that while many interactions between European and global level take place at the level of scientists, projects, (joint) programming, assessment review and adoption or decision making by parties, a more strategic approach could further improve processes and results.

A workshop took place on June 1st at DG R&I and was attended by over 30 experts from government, civil society and international organizations, to discuss the methodologies used to interpret international assessments into prioritisation of needs. Discussions were fruitful, and it is expected that the analysis will help identify the steps forward for better linking European and Global science and policy on biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Social Innovation and Nature-based Solutions (NBS)

In December 2016, EKLIPSE, EPBRS and BiodivERsA jointly organised a participatory foresight workshop in Brussels to discuss research needed to face future societal challenges and emerging issues.

The workshop resulted in a presentation, main report with annexes, and a policy brief summarising key recommendations for science policy on NBS and social innovation.

The Impacts of Artificial Electro-magnetic Radiations on Wildlife (Flora and Fauna)

EKLIPSE organised a web conference from Monday 22nd of January to Thursday 25th of January 2018 and two reports were published to highlight the current state of the art in this field and to identify knowledge gaps related to different taxonomic groups.

Horizon Scanning: from interesting to useful, from practice to impact.

EKLIPSE and the Joint Research centre organised a workshop called "Horizon scanning: from interesting to useful, from practice to impact".

The event gathered professionals from different fields and sectors who all use or perform horizon scanning in their activities. Its purpose was to get insights from these practicioners on how to run such an exercise. The shared experiences have been collected in the form of a practical guide for those wishing to develop a horizon scanning activity.
